Sophie Devine is widely regarded as one of the legendary players in New Zealand women’s cricket. Her powerful gameplay has solidified her status as a master of the T20 format. Over the years, Devine has led the New Zealand women’s cricket team, famously known as the White Ferns, in both ODIs and T20Is. However, in a recent announcement from New Zealand Cricket, it was revealed that Devine has chosen to step down from her position as the T20I captain, marking the end of her leadership role in the shortest format of the game.
Sophie Devine’s Leadership Record in T20 Internationals
According to the official announcement, Sophie Devine will step down as the T20I captain after the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup. Devine initially took on the role during the 2014-15 season, where she led the New Zealand women’s cricket team, also known as the White Ferns, in a few matches. She was later appointed as the full-time captain in 2020. Throughout her tenure, Devine has captained the White Ferns in 56 T20 Internationals, achieving 25 victories, facing 28 defeats, and seeing one match end in a tie. Her leadership has been a defining aspect of New Zealand’s T20 journey over the years.
Devine Explains Her Decision to Step Down as T20I Captain

“I am immensely proud to have had the opportunity to captain the WHITE FERNS in both formats of the game. While I have thoroughly enjoyed the responsibilities that come with the captaincy, it can also be quite demanding. By stepping down from the T20 captaincy, I aim to lighten my load and concentrate more on my playing role, as well as support and develop future leaders within the team.”
Devine also confirmed that she will continue to serve as the captain in the ODI format.
“I’m not ready to relinquish the ODI captaincy just yet. However, I recognize that I won’t be in this role forever. By stepping back from one format at a time, it provides an opportunity for emerging leaders to gain experience and prepare for future leadership roles,” Devine explained.
Sophie Devine’s Career in International Cricket
Sophie Devine began her international cricket career with the New Zealand Women’s team in 2006. Over the course of her career, she has participated in 147 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 135 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). Devine has accumulated over 3,000 runs and achieved more than 100 wickets across these formats.
Her extensive experience and all-round skills have established her as an invaluable asset to the White Ferns. Devine’s contributions in both batting and bowling have made her a key player for the team, showcasing her significance in New Zealand women’s cricket.
