USA Cricket Sidesteps ICC Disqualification; Full Details Inside
USA Cricket has met one of the two crucial criteria required to avoid disqualification as an ICC Associate member by appointing Jonathan Atkieson as its new chief executive officer, effective August 1.
The ICC had issued a warning to USA Cricket earlier this month, citing two key breaches. One of the issues was the absence of a CEO, while the other involved non-compliance with governance standards set by the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC).
To meet the requirements, each sport governing body must attain National Governing Body (NGB) status, essential for inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC), during its 141st Session and Executive Board meeting in Mumbai last year, approved the addition of cricket to the Los Angeles Games.
“USA Cricket has appointed Johnathan Atkeison as its new CEO, effective August 1, 2024,” announced the organization on its website.
Atkieson most recently served as the Chief Operating Officer for USA Rugby, bringing over 15 years of experience in national governing bodies to his new role at USA Cricket.
“I’m honored to join the team at USA Cricket. It’s an exciting time for the sport in the United States, especially with the men’s national team’s historic performance in the recent T20 World Cup, the conclusion of the second season of Major League Cricket, and the upcoming opportunity to showcase cricket at the LA28 Olympics,” said Atkinson.
“Our goal is to build a world-class organization that capitalizes on this momentum and firmly establishes cricket’s place in the American sporting landscape,” he added.
Atkieson is credited with guiding USA Rugby through a financial restructuring in 2020, followed by a four-year period of rapid growth and development.
