Chris Silverwood Steps Down as Sri Lanka’s Head Coach Following Poor T20 World Cup 2024 Performance
Chris Silverwood’s resignation as head coach of the Sri Lankan team has surprised many, citing personal reasons.
This comes after Sri Lanka’s disappointing run in the T20 World Cup 2024, where they managed just one win in four matches, failing to qualify for the Super 8s as South Africa and Bangladesh advanced from their group.
“Being an international coach entails extended periods away from family,” Silverwood stated. “After extensive discussions with my loved ones and with a profound sense of sadness, I believe it’s time for me to prioritize spending quality time together back home.”
“I am grateful to the players, coaches, backroom staff, and SLC management for their unwavering support during my tenure in Sri Lanka. Your support has been instrumental in our achievements.”
“It has been a great honor for me to be a part of Sri Lanka Cricket, and I will cherish many fond memories.”
During his tenure as head coach, Silverwood achieved significant milestones, including winning the T20 Asia Cup in 2022 and reaching the finals of the 50-over Asia Cup in 2023.
Under his leadership, the team also celebrated notable victories in bilateral series, including a memorable home series win against Australia in the ODI format and two successful Test series wins away against Bangladesh.
Sri Lanka Cricket has extended their best wishes to Silverwood for his future endeavors and expressed gratitude for his valuable contributions.
With Silverwood’s departure, Sri Lanka Cricket faces an unexpected transition, needing to regroup and set a new course for the future. His time as coach marks a chapter filled with both successes and challenges.
